LINT & DUST TESTER

The MB Lint & Dust Tester was developed in response to the increasing emphasis which is being placed on cleanliness of paper surfaces, particularly for those used in printing applications. Just as paper consumers are demanding cleaner sheets, the task is becoming even more difficult with increased use of secondary fiber and ever higher filler levels.

Evaluation of linting and dusting at the mill level has been difficult at best, usually requiring the test printing of large quantities of paper to obtain realistic results. Because of this, significant problems with loose or weakly bound surface particles and fibers are, in many cases, not detected at the mill and are a frequent and expensive source of customer complaints and "adjustments". This no longer needs to be the case.

Developed by MacMillan Bloedel Research, the MB Linting and Dusting Tester is used ON MACHINE to quickly evaluate quantities of loose and weakly bound fiber and filler on the sheet surface. This is accomplished through the use of a 3 stage measurement head which loosens weakly bound materials with its "disruptor jets", moves them to the vacuum section, and removes them to the measurement chamber for evaluation. It is worth noting that the compressed air from the disruptor jets also acts as an air bearing which greatly reduces or eliminates contact with the sheet. Contaminants are sucked through a calibrated filter and quantified as a function of the time required to accomplish a given pressure drop across the filter.

The MB Linting & Dusting Tester, in its standard form, is mounted on a wheeled cart so that it is portable and can be used throughout the mill. In addition to use on the paper machine, it has been used to evaluate contaminants produced on winders and calenders.

While the instrument was originally developed for use on newsprint, it has been successfully applied to a variety of other paper grades, groundwood and free sheets .

Studies with the MB Linting & Dusting Tester, both by PapriCan and by mill users have shown excellent correlation with actual printing press results. Reprints of these studies are available upon request.
