MB Print Indicator
Rapid Evaluation of Printability and Mottle
ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN FLEXOGRAPHIC PRINTING
The MacMillan Bloedel Print Indicator was developed by MacMillan Bloedel Research to provide a rapid indication of print quality and sizing characteristics.
Using a very precise analytical electronic pumping system, the instrument dispenses micro liter sized drops of ink or other fluids onto a Mylar application apron. The drops are then drawn onto the paper sample and down its length by a motorized blade at a controlled speed and pressure.
In the case of ink application, the resulting printing length is directly related to ink receptivity and surface topography and has been shown to provide excellent correlation to half tone dot quality. In the case of sizing fluid, the test strip length shows a direct correlation to the surface sizing characteristics of the paper.
By increasing or decreasing the test speed, the operator can increase or decrease the influence of topography versus holdout (sizing) in the test. Various inks or sizing test fluids may be selected as most appropriate to a particular mill's product types and paper end uses.
The MB Print Indicator is a precision instrument which uses electronic controls and motorized sequences to provide repeatable and consistent results for the assessment of product for timely production decisions.
Field tests were conducted during development to assess the viability of the instruments data. Print length results were obtained for various types of papers which correlated very well with both visual analysis and Image Analysis techniques for offset, heat set web offset, and gravure dot quality analysis.
It was also evident that this method reveals two sidedness and print mottle problems which are invisible to air leak printability test methods. Copies of these studies are available upon request.
